Emergency Dentistry Q & A

What does an emergency dentist do?

Emergency dentists treat oral injuries and pain that need to be fixed or addressed immediately. Dental emergencies comprise any situation in which you need to save a broken or knocked-out tooth. Getting to Vitta Dental within 30 minutes of your tooth or mouth injury could mean the difference between saving or losing the tooth.

While some infections and severe toothache can constitute a dental emergency, most dental emergencies, such as a knocked-out or cracked tooth, are the result of traumatic mouth injuries.

When should I call an emergency dentist?

The following situations are generally considered dental emergencies:
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • A loose permanent tooth
  • Severe tooth or mouth pain
  • Bleeding inside your mouth from your cheeks, tongue, or gums
  • An injury to your mouth or face
  • Swelling in your gums, tongue, or mouth
  • A severely cracked or broken tooth
  • A cut or tear on your lips
If you chip a tooth but it doesn’t appear as if you may lose the tooth entirely, it may not be a dental emergency. That said, feel free to contact Dr. Aryan if you're concerned. He can explain how to take care of your tooth until you can make it into the office.

How do I care for a knocked-out tooth?

A knocked-out tooth is one of the most severe dental emergencies. If you don’t receive immediate dental care, you may be at risk of losing the tooth for good. To try and save the tooth, start by cleaning the injured tooth and the inside of your mouth. Rinse your mouth and tooth with warm water, being careful not to touch the tooth by the roots.

As you rinse the tooth, hold it by the crown. Using light pressure, reposition the cleaned tooth in the empty socket in your gum. Close your mouth and bite down gently on the tooth, if you can. It might help to bite down on a soft piece of gauze until you can visit Vitta Dental. If you’re unable to place the tooth back into its socket, put your tooth in a small cup of milk to help preserve it until you get to the dental office.
